Making a return from FFVIII, Triple Triad was included in the 2.5.1 patch as part of the Gold Saucer and is an in-game collectable card game you can play both against NPCs and other players. There are currently 80 different cards to collect which can be either purchased using MGP, won of certain characters littered throughout the world, or obtained in a select number of boss battles.

You can get started by heading to the Gold Saucer and speaking to the Triple Triad Master, which will get you a starter deck of the five cards below and access to a tutorial that will familiarize yourself with the basics of the system.

Progression Guide

While I'm sure you're eager to jump right in challenge Eorzea's various NPCs to start building your deck, diving into the deep end without knowing the various rules is probably going to end up in a lot of frustration and lost MGP - especially if you're unsure of how the Plus works or accidentally end up challenging players with significantly stronger decks.

After completing the tutorial given by the Triple Triad Master at Gold Saucer (4, 7), practice a bit on Jonas of the Three Spades and Guhtwint of the Three Diamonds in the surrounding area - the cost of challenging these two is relatively low and they drop a couple of cards to give your deck more options.

Once you feel confident enough, your objective is to get 30 different cards to have the 2:star: restriction lifted from your deck so that you can add as many to your hand as you want, which will drastically improve your chances of taking down other players. There's a similar upgrade when you reach 60 cards that will let you add 3:star: in any quantity to your hand, but let's just focus on the first boost for now.

I'll be updating this more over the weekend!

Rules

This section will be expanded on at a later stage with illustrations to help convey examples more effectively, but in the meantime here's the jist of it to get you started.

All Open, Three Open

The Open rules apply to the cards, where "All" will have both players cards visible to each other while "Three" will display three random cards from your hand to your opponent, concealing two.

Sudden Death

This rule comes into effect when a draw is reached, where the round will restart and each player will have whichever cards in their control in the last round added to their hand. If five consecutive matches are played and all end in a draw, an overall draw will be declared.

Random, Order, Chaos

These three rules affect the hand you're dealt at the start of each game. As you can guess, "Random" will replace your deck with cards from your collection at random, while "Order" will force your to play each card from your deck in a specified order. "Chaos" is a combination of the two which will have you play each card selected randomly from your deck.

Reverse, Fallen Ace

The "Reverse" rule switches the conditions for capturing cards from ascending order to descending, so that lower numbers are more powerful than higher ones. Likewise, "Fallen Ace" will render cards bearing an A to be captured by those with a 1. Be sure you have a pre-made deck of your lowest cards in case this rule ever comes up so you're prepared!

Plus, Same, Combo

This one confuses a lot of players, but is actually quite simple and just requires some basic addition. "Plus" works by adding the numbers on your card to two adjacent ones, and if the numbers match the card/s will be flipped over. For example, refer to the image below (taken from this reddit thread by Xiaounlimited):

As you can see, by placing the blue card between the two red ones we trigger a reaction. When the numbers facing each opposing card are added together and match, both cards will be claimed.

The "Same" rule works in the same way without the inclusion of addition, in that you simply capture cards with numbers that match your own. "Combo" occurs when cards triggered by either Plus or Same have been flipped - when captured, they're played as ordinary cards and if they have a higher number than opposing cards lying next to them, those will be captured as well.

Obtaining Cards

There's a number of different ways you can go about expanding your collection. If you're comfortable with the Plus rule, the starter cards are surprisingly powerful and can take down just about anyone with the right planning - though you'll find yourself coming up short when you need to brute-force your way through a match and you'll want to get some larger numbers asap.

You can purchase Bronze, Silver or Gold card packs from the Triple Triad Trader at Gold Saucer (4, 7), which will get you one of a set group of cards at random. While tempting, you should know that most of what you'd get from these packs can also be obtained from defeating certain NPCs - there are some very powerful cards that can only be obtained from these packs though, so it's still a viable option if you have MGP to burn.

The cards you can obtain from the packs are as follows:

Triple Triad NPC Locations

Here's a list of the various characters you can challenge in order of MGP cost - it's hard to recommend which NPCs you should target for an easy win as regional rule changes such as Reverse or Plus can strongly influence their difficulty, however most carrying <20 level cards shouldn't prove too challenging to take down until you get a stronger deck.

Holy crap  Thank you Nick!!!!! this is fabulous <3

On a sidenote, make sure to put your best card in slot #4 in your deck, or at the very least not in last position, just so if "order" comes into play, you don't miss out on playing it if you're not selected as first player to play :)

For the record, (very) approximative drop rate for high tier cards based on player observations:

- From NPC
4 star is 0.5~1%
5 star is 0.1~0.2%

- from trials
HM trials ~2%
EX trials ~15%
